Narrative from Peter (Kaine) Tevonian heya, Here's what I can remember, to the best of my hazy memory: Wanderer (Greg Scheidel) and I began working on Brigadoon around mid-June of 1990. It was built on MUCK, I think version 2.1 (that's pretty much a guess. If you have any dates on releases of MUCK versions, you could double check. I'm fairly sure Greg used the latest versions available. We wanted to add some code changes to the most current version, but Moira among others said they were too MUD-specific and therefore wouldn't be added. Some of those features were things like the ASCII map function to show the topology. Neither of us had ever seen any MUDs with that type of setup before...) Brigadoon was opened to the public in mid-July I think. It was a few weeks before whichever Random-n-Moira MUD existed then went down. I think it was Asylum, but I'm not sure -- they all run together. :) One night, while I was on Asylum, I mentioned to Garrett and Tif (who were still together then, of course) that we had this new MUD called Brigadoon up. (As another aside, we named Brig months before we ever heard any mention of the idea of Brigadoon Day for other MUDs.) Anyway, Garrett stopped over to take a look. All we had was the basic town layout and the Chat Line which Snooze was in charge of. Garrett decided he liked it, and went back to Asylum to tell others about it. Having an "outsider" decide it was an okay place to hang out was the turning point and that night our record attendance went from 5 to 21. I'm surprisingly foggy on how long Brig was up. Random or Moira could probably tell you better than I. I believe their next MUD sprang up soon after, or soon before Brig officially died. We announced the possible death, unofficially, about 2 weeks before it collapsed. The biggest, and almost only reason we gave up on it was the rampant misuse of MUCKER bits, and the incessant stream of questions coming from fledgling MUCK programmers. This wasn't a big deal for me, as I didn't program for the most part, but it was overwhelming for Greg, the key programmer answer-man. Galataeus tried to ease Greg's load, but he wasn't able to log in much. Blackmore tended to just redirect inquiries to Greg. Anyway, as you probably remember, we decided to give some temporary Wiz Bits to Blackbird and Dirque and they got a few people very upset. One of them was the Ever Irritating Arch-Teryx. After Arch-Teryx was toaded by Blackbird, I think, he whined and bitched and we reinstated his char. He then bitched so much about having been toaded in the first place, that we toaded him for real. Then Greg had the idea to toad one pain-in-the-ass player from each letter of the alphabet. Arch-Teryx counted as "A." Well this went on for about 2 hours, until we couldn't think of anyone else we really wanted toaded. By this time, Blackbird and Dirque had made good (or bad, depending on your point of view) use of the DARK flag and had pissed off more players. Somewhere along this time, I think someone's MUCK program went haywire and dumped the core. And we just never put it back up. I really don't even know what month this took place in, but it was winter/early spring of `91 I think. Sorry I can't be more precise on the dates. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more info. --Pete
